It is with deep sorrow that we regret to inform you of the sudden death of Awet Hadish who passed away on March 29th of 2009 at the young age of twenty seven. Awet was a co-founder of the Eritrean Youth Association of Canada and served as the first chairperson of the organization. There is no doubt that this man who was known for his creativity, wit, intelligence and resolve will be missed by those of us who had the pleasure of working with him.

Awet had a natural talent for leadership and is credited for inspiring the creation of the Toronto Red Sea Basketball Club. He also co-founded the youth group Warsai in the late 1990’s; a precursor to the Eritrean Youth Association of Canada which was founded in 2003. While serving as the chairperson of EYAC he was instrumental in the creation of the Youth Talent Showcase that takes place every year at the opening of Toronto’s Eritrean Festival. Awet’s patriotism and passion for helping his community inspired many young Eritreans to be active in community work. Awet always attentively listened to the concerns of youth and his fellow board members; this was one the characteristics that made him a great leader. His dedication to EYAC’s vision remained throughout the years.

In memory of Awet Hadish, EYAC will be renaming an existing scholarship in his name destined for students in Eritrea who exemplify similar leadership skills. Furthermore the Toronto Red Sea Basketball Club is now being renamed the Toronto Awet Basketball Club.

Awet’s passing is a great loss to our organization and to our community and we will miss him dearly. We would like to extend our condolences to his family and wish them strength during these difficult times.

With sympathy,

Members and Executive Board of the Eritrean Youth Association of Canada
